Abuja Disco task force uncovers massive energy theft

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has said its special task force has uncovered huge cases of electricity theft by customers using meters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The company’s Executive Director, Commercial Services, Engr. Ernest Mupwaya, who confirmed this in a statement from the Media Head, Ahmed Shekarau revealed that many of those customers involved in the theft are high profile personalities resident in Abuja and environs.
Engr. Mupwaya warned all customers engaged in such fraudulent activities to desist from doing that as the AEDC will soon launch “Operation Shame Them” campaign to expose all those involved in the act, including the high profile personalities.
The ED, who declined to provide details of what the “Operation Shame Them” campaign will entail, said the company plans to involve the police and the media in the exercise.
The AEDC and the police had early this year agreed to collaborate towards tackling theft of electricity and vandalism within the company’s coverage area.
The agreement was reached at a meeting between the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the management of AEDC led by its Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Neil Croucher. The Police IG was represented at the meeting by the DIG (Logistics and Supply), Mr. Mamman Tsafe.
At the meeting, Mr. Croucher, who regretted the rising cases of theft of energy in the power sector, said the company needed the support of the police in dealing with the twin evils of electricity theft and vandalism.
Citing the Penal Code and other relevant laws, the MD said the company was ready to collaborate with the police to further reduce the incidence of commercial and technical losses being incurred by thecompany.
