The Akwa Ibom State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja yesterday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to move all the materials used in the April 11, 2015 governorship election in the state to its headquarters in Abuja for inspection.
The tribunal Chairman, Justice Sadiq Umar gave the order following an application by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its gubernatorial candidate, Umana Okon Umana. The petitioners had earlier urged the tribunal to order the movement of the election materials from Uyo to Abuja for their (petitioners’) inspection.
During the tribunal sitting yesterday, the petitioners asked for extension of time to enable them inspect the election materials which they argued were not made available to them by INEC to enable them challenge Governor Udom Emmanuel’s victory.
Following the Tribunal’s directive on the movement of the election materials to Abuja, it also directed that security agencies should ensure adequate security of the materials during movement and inspection by the petitioners.
The lead lawyer to the APC and Umana, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) had filed the petition on behalf of his clients, challenging the election of Governor Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The tribunal declined the oral application for the striking out of the name of Emmanuel from the petition and ordered the governor (the first respondent) to file and serve his process yesterday. The matter has been adjourned till today
