Bill on devt of FCT satellite towns scales second reading
A bill seeking to Establish Federal Capital Territory Satellite Town Development Agency and for Other Related Matters 2013 scaled second reading.
The bill, sponsored by Senate Committee Chairman on the FCT, Senator Smart Adeyemi, sought to give legal backing to the agency that is already in existence with the mandate to embark on infrastructural development in satellite towns around the FCT.
Senators, who unanimously supported the bill, hailed its coming, saying it would not only help the agency to fast-track development of the FCT satellite towns, but would also enable such towns to develop at the same pace with the FCT.
They also argued that when development is fast-tracked in the satellite towns, Nigerians who reside in such places would be given a sense of belonging and simultaneously enabled to enjoy social amenities available to residents of the FCT.
In his own comment, Ekweremadu, who noted that one of the responsibilities of the National Assembly was to help decongest the city, noted that one way of doing so was to legally support the agency in developing surrounding communities.
He said doing so would bring down the high rate of property in the FCT.
