Members of the Benin zone of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will today begin protest against the poor funding of Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho.

Prof. Fred Esumeh, who is the zonal coordinator of the union, disclosed this yesterday, while addressing journalists in Benin City.

He said the protest scheduled for Osun and Oyo states is aimed at drawing public attention to the lack of funding by governors of the two states.

Esume said ASUU members from other branches and zones nationwide would join them in the protest.

He expressed concern about the action of the two states, which is to kill the university.

He said: “Rather than addressing the abnormally of underfunding, the two states have since established additional universities each in their respective states.

“When a government and indeed, an establishment engages workers, they deserve to be paid their wages. But, this is not the case in LAUTECH, where the two visitors to the university have shied away from their responsibilities.”

The coordinator accused the governors of conspiring to deny the workers in that university their rights to wages.

The union stressed that by their action, the option left is for the two visitors to honourably resign, for not meeting up with expectations of their offices.

Esumeh called on Nigerians, the good people of Oyo and Osun states and all lovers of education, to urgently intervene to save the university from extinction.

He expressed the hope about ASUU coming up with alternative action to support its members and students in the unfolding avoidable crisis in LAUTECH.

ASUU members from the University of Benin, Benin City, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, and Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa attended the meeting.

LAUTECH branch of the union had embarked on a two-week warning strike to draw the attention of government of Oyo and Osun states to the poor state and inadequate funding of the institution.
