Update:Protesting workers vacate Abuja-Lokoja road after hours of blockade
Following admonition by the traditional ruler of Koton Karfe, Kogi state, protesting workers have agreed to suspend their protest, freeing up the Abuja-Lokoja highway for motorists.
The workers were said to agree to suspend the blockade of the road out of respect for the traditional ruler.
However, they promised to resume the protests if their salaries owed to them by the state government are not paid soon, Abdulkarim stated in a text message to our reporter.
Local Government workers in Kogi State have blocked the Federal High Way around Koton Karfe in protest over non-payment of salaries arrears by the state government despite the bail out by the federal government.
A concerned citizen Zubairu Abdulkarim at the scene in Katon Karfe told Daily Trust via a telephone interview that the protest has resulted in a heavy grid lock on the High way as commuters have been stuck on the road for hours.
Speaking further, Zubairu Abdulkarim said the protest started around 8 am this morning, and has gained momentum as more protesters come out to block the road.
He described the scene as chaotic with hundreds of protesters on the road causing over two kilometers of traffic as vehicle and commuters are trapped without movement.
Abdulkarim also noted the arrival of the traditional ruler of Katon-Karfe who made an appearance at the scene to calm down the protesters
